Week 3 Story: Fennley Skis

Image
You can find the current version of this story at my Portfolio Site linked below. Folklore With A Twist There once was a young store keeper his name was Eric Fennley. He lives in the small town of Frisco Colorado. He was the current owner of his family ski shop Fennely skis. His father opened this shop up when the town had just built the ski resort called Copper Mountain.   The dad sold hundreds of skis when he first opened. As time went on and on rival ski shops were built and business was taken from the original ski shop. Eric’s dad was growing ill and told Eric one day he would have to take over as the store owner. Eric ran by his dads’ side as store owner as his dad was getting sicker and sicker. One day Eric woke up for work and his mother said his father passed away in his sleep. Devastated Eric though of all of the things he didn’t get to say to his father before he passed. Eric mourned that morning but the more he thought about it, he knew there was only one thing his fath

Reading Notes: The Spirit of Achilles

Image
The story I have chosen to complete reading notes for today was the The Spirit of Achilles. I did not have any previous knowledge on this story but i did learn a little. One of the sections of this story that stuck out to me was when Achilles son of Peleus said the following. " If i could only return strong to my fathers house, for a single hour, I would give those who abuse him and his honor cause to regret the power of my invincible hands." This section was powerful, because he is pretty much saying anyone that had disrespected his father, he would put fear in their eyes and make them wish they had respected  his father. This could be turned into one weeks story easily by creating some characters and create a story like that follows this plot and takeaway. Reading Notes: Homer's Odyssey Part A

Image
The story I read for the Tuesday reading was the land of the Cyclopes. This story was a little hard to follow and form a plot for it, but this story was about where the cyclopes lived and their interactions with the rest of the islands. The cyclopes did not make a point to meet with their neighbors. The cyclopes are given everything on their island by the gods so there is no need for interaction with others, they have sheep for food, and they have an abundance of woods. This was a very interesting story that I am very intrigued with, and hope to read more about. Feedback Thoughts

Image
The two articles I have chosen to write about are 5-second habit to rewire your harshly self-critical brain, as well as Seven ways to crush self-doubt. The first article was very interesting in where its main takeaway was REBS. This acronym stands for reality based self congratulation. it is supposed to make you step back and make you acknowledge that you are always worthy of respect, love and forgiveness. This practice is where you congratulate yourself for every small advance in something or every small victory, this is trying to make you create a steady stream of self-congratulation. The second article was very interesting in the aspect that i was very true to me. I often looks at others works, or successes and try to compare it to myself. The seven points the authors points out are as follows. Don't compare yourself to others, Abandon perfectionism, Be vulnerable to a trusted community, Embrace a growth mindset, Set goals that are within your control,  Treat your work like

Topic Brainstorm

Image
There were many myth and folklore topics that grabbed my attention. But the four possible story book topics that have caught my eye the most were Foxes, OU Ghost stories, Zeus and Creek Stories. The topic of Foxes grabbed my attention because I like animals and I think that it would be interesting to read stories about them, and retell those stories. I do not have any previous knowledge of the folktales that foxes are apart of. One of the stories i could see me making about foxes is a day in the life of a fox. This was one promising source i found that a possible story could be based around. The Fox and the Grapes The next topic that I found interesting and that could be a possible story book topic is OU ghost stories. I do have a little bit of knowledge of some of the ghosts stories at OU but chosing this topic would allow for me to gain alot more knowledge of all of the different ghost stories at OU. One source that I found very promising for this story book was from the OU daily

Week 2 Story: Man Learns about Humility

Image
Eric was up admiring the great statue of an Indian killing a bear up in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia. Suddenly from behind the statue a great grizzly bear appeared from the woods. Walking calmly towards eric the bear asks, “What are your thoughts of this statue?” Eric replied in shock to the bear “I believe it shows how man has become more powerful than nature, and this is still true to this day.” The bear laughs as he walks around eric, saying if man is so powerful then you will be able to prove it right now in a fight against me. Eric taken back nervously, but kind of with a chip on his shoulder responds of course I could beat you in a fight right now. The two look at each other calmly and nod their heads, and the fight begins. The bear charges towards eric and ferociously taking a swipe towards his face, barely nicking his cheek. Eric jolts back in shock and then runs full speed towards the bear who knocks eric to the ground once again. Eric realizing there

Reading Notes

The story that really grabbed my attention was Heavenly Beings: Susanoo and Orochi. This story was well thought out and very well put together. The way the story used dialogue made it very easy to follow. The story is very descriptive when describing the fish monster, and has great imagery such as red as a "ripe mountain cherry" when talking about the monsters red eyes. This story really did a good job at keeping the readers attention , and is something i will be trying to do when i am writing my first stories. (Image above is of the fight with the monster. Time Strategies

Image
The two articles I chose to read about time management strategies was "The Important Habit of Just Starting" by Jory Mackay and "How to Beat Procrastination" by Caroline Webb. These articles were very useful in giving tips and ideas for worth ethic ideas that i can use in my future career after OU. One of the things the author said that stuck out to me in this article was " The guilt and frustration we feel from not starting is often worse than the pain of actually doing work", and this stuck with me because often times in my past semesters I have experienced this exact feeling, which in makes me strive to enable these concepts and ideas that he his providing even more. Based on last semester, my biggest time challenges will be spreading out all of the courses work with ZERO procrastination. Currently my time management skills consists of taking an initial look at the different assignments i have to complete and assigning about how long i believe each

Technology

Image
I am fairly familiar with some of the technology tools that were listed such as Wikipedia, bookmarking, cropping. I have some experience with blogging and posting, from last semesters epics of india course. The online environment is unlike any other I have experienced in other classes because most other classes I meet up with colleagues to work, or it is face to face in class, but in this blogging form nothing will be face to face everything is over the internet. Website creation is probably the only skill I would like to work on in this class that I believe could benefit me. (The picture above closely relates to this course I thought. Online course )

Myth and Folklore Assignments

Image
The Assignments that intrigue me most in this class are the weekly story books. This is unlike any of my other classes have done, because most of my classes are not interactive on a weekly basis via the blog. But I am looking forward to this new challenge that will span the semester. The extra credits grab my attention because I look forward to getting ahead in this class, and expand the knowledge acquired from this class. Image is of the Sower on the South Oval. Groth Mindset at OU

Image
From what I have learned growth mindset is the idea of two mindsets fixed and growth. Fixed mindset is the idea that someone believes they can only be so smart or so fast and so on. While growth mindset is the idea that someone believes that they may not know something yet or can not do something yet, but they can get there over time and over a period of learning and training. In Dweck's talk she had a big emphasis on YET, you may not be there yet but you will be there, you may not have passed the class YET but you will pass over time.      I have never personally heard Carol Dweck's talk on growth mindset, but I have heard the idea of growth mindset in many things that I do. I use to have a very fixed mindset in many aspects of my life. Thinking I would never get down to this weight or I would never qualify for a national championship, over the past two years of training I have lost 65 pounds and qualified for the college national championship in the spring. Just using the

Drew Fazzino Introduction

Image
Hi all,           My name is Drew Fazzino, I am a Senior at the University of Oklahoma. My major is Mechanical Engineering. The coolest thing about my major is seeing how different systems work together and operate. Another cool thing about my major is making parts in CAD and generating tool paths to machine your own parts in a CNC. The best class I took last semester was Computer Integrated Manufacture because I learned different CAM platforms and how to generate your own tool paths to the parts you make in platforms such as solidworks. My biggest accomplishment last semester was boosting my gpa some and just having a good semester in general. Over the summer break, I went to Colorado for a couple of weeks and relaxed a little before and after my internship at innovex downhole solutions. It was a blessing to receive the internship this summer because it gave me some great relative infield experience working with lead mechanical engineers all summer long. Although I said Colorado w

Storybook Favorites

The three-story books I have chosen to write about is flood myths, within a dark forest and Tales of West Africa: Isnana. The First storybook Flood Myths is a topic that is completely new to me. The title did a great job at giving me an idea of what this story book was going to cover.   The introduction did a really good job at drawing the reader in, he made the reader work to see what he would be reading about. And ended up giving a great overview of the three following stories. Overall, I thought that the pages layout was nice, instead of a white background I might have changed that background color. The second storybook Within a forest dark, this as well is a completely new topic for me and should be interesting. The Title did an alright job at giving insight into what the storybook would be covering in the stories. This storybooks introduction did a great job at thoroughly giving an overview of the stories that would be told in the storybook. The storybooks page layout wa

Favorite Place: Colorado

Image
I love being outdoors so choosing one from many places was really difficult, but I decided on the Colorado. Whether it is winter time or summertime you can find me in the mountains, hiking, skiing or fishing. There is something so surreal about it being dead quiet in the mountains that you can not really find many other places. One of my favorite places in Colorado is Mount Elbert which is the highest mountain found in the Colorado with an elevation of 14,440 ft. (Pictured above is Mount Elbert Picture Source: proactiveoutside - WordPress.com) This mountain is classified as a "Fourteener" Which is one of 53 mountains in Colorado that rise above 14,000 feet in elevation. All fourteeners have trails that you can hike that take most of the day, I have been able to do three fourteeners so far and look forward to doing many more.
