You can find the current version of this story at my Portfolio Site linked below.
Folklore With A Twist
There once was a young store keeper his name was Eric Fennley. He lives in the small town of Frisco Colorado. He was the current owner of his family ski shop Fennely skis. His father opened this shop up when the town had just built the ski resort called Copper Mountain. The dad sold hundreds of skis when he first opened. As time went on and on rival ski shops were built and business was taken from the original ski shop. Eric’s dad was growing ill and told Eric one day he would have to take over as the store owner. Eric ran by his dads’ side as store owner as his dad was getting sicker and sicker. One day Eric woke up for work and his mother said his father passed away in his sleep. Devastated Eric though of all of the things he didn’t get to say to his father before he passed. Eric mourned that morning but the more he thought about it, he knew there was only one thing his father would want him doing right now, and that was opening up their shop.

Eric mourned that morning but the more he thought about it, he knew there was only one thing his father would want him doing right now, and that was opening up their shop.
Eric slowly made his way into town that morning and opened up
shop. He carried on throughout the day until the day came to an end. As soon as
he was going to lock the doors a teenager came into the shop to look at some
different skis. Eric and the kid got to talking and Eric found out there was a
big event happening on the mountain that following weekend. This was going to
bring great business to the shop. The following weekend rolled around, and many
people poured into Frisco. Many skiers came into the shop as expected but not
with the respect Eric was hoping for. They Were very disrespectful of the shop
and saying it was old, and needed to be more modern, and that the skis were out
dated. But they had no idea of the history of the shop. That this was the start
to ski shops in the Frisco area. Eric went to the looked at a picture of him
and his dad and said “ If I could only show these skiers the magic of these skis,
I would give those who abuse and make fun of them and my fathers shop cause to
regret the power of their invincible abilities.” Eric went back out the front
and continued with the customers only wishing they had respect.
Authors Notes:
The story that this was based off of was The Spirit of Achilles. I did not have any previous
knowledge on this story but I did learn a little. One of the sections of this
story that stuck out to me was when Achilles son of Peleus said the following.
" If I could only return strong to my father’s house, for a single hour, I
would give those who abuse him and his honor cause to regret the power of my
invincible hands." This section was powerful, because he is pretty much
saying anyone that had disrespected his father, he would put fear in their eyes
and make them wish they had respected his father. I turned this into the
story by changing characters and setting, and instead of putting fear int heir
eyes, the disrespectful skiers would never know the magic of the skis.

Hi Drew! This is a very creative take on the Spirit of Achilles. Hearing about Eric's father pass was very tragic, and I wish I could have gotten some more closure on this story! The ending feels pretty abrupt, but very powerful. It is an interesting adaptation of the quote from the Spirit of Achilles. Great job on your author's note! The story didn't make complete sense to me until I read it, and it cleared things up for me. Great post!
ReplyDeleteHi Drew,
ReplyDeleteI really love how you changed the setting and characters in the story. You really took a lot of liberty in your retelling of this story. It was a great adaptation though. I was wondering if maybe it had any personal touch to it. Is this a story you heard from a friend or lived through yourself? Like Darren, the story was a bit confusing to me at first, but after reading the author's note it became much clearer!
Looking forward to more of your posts!

Hey there Drew,
ReplyDeleteGreat story. Achilles is a fantastic character to explore. In the orignal, just like you pointed out, Achilles has some commendable qualities. He was protective of his father but also aware of his own abilities and the differnce in his strength versus others'. He is a demi god after all! I really enjoyed your adaptation. Pretty devastating plot wise, but it definitely carries the same qualities as the original. Looking forward to reading more of these in the future.
